Yesterday I planned on today’s post title being “ Lasts”. Like last sunrise 🌅 walk on the beach, last 🍳 breakfast, last visit to the library 📚 and the post office, last yoga 🧘‍♀️ class, last sun tanning on the deck, last dinner 🍽 out, last sunset walk, and last sleep 😴.

What a difference a day makes.

Although we’re healthy and as of today there’s only one case 🤒 in Montgomery, Alabama, I totally understand their position. It will be challenging but it could certainly be much worse. We will survive it.

And I’ve already had family and friends (I am so blessed) offer to get us groceries as we completely cleaned out the fridge and freezer before we left. Not a thing in them. Absolutely nada. Even unplugged them before I left. Hopefully there’s still food in the grocery stores. I hear it’s worse than any Christmas 🎄 shopping day. And what’s with this mad rush to buy all the 🧻 toilet paper? Sometimes people can go a bit overboard, don’t you think? But scary times, right?

Anyway we’re mostly all packed. We’d thought about packing up and taking off this afternoon and trying to be home by Sunday but that would mean driving at night both days which is difficult on unknown roads. So we opted to leave very early tomorrow morning. Praying 🙏 that you know who doesn’t all of a sudden decide to close the US / Canadian border. That would be a nightmare.

And just thinking about the stock market makes me sick to my stomach. But nothing I can do about that except keep losing money 💵. But again, it could be worse. At least we are healthy.

So now it’s one last sleep 💤 and then hope to be on the road by 4:00 am tomorrow morning.

Yes. You read that correctly. Today we went to a church service held at the Flora Bama in Perdido Key, Florida. (The property straddles the Alabama and Florida state lines, meaning it’s one of the few bars in the country where you can have a drink in two states at once.) This is where they hold their weekly church services. And to answer your question – yes, you can get an alcoholic drink 🍹 at the church service. We didn’t. But we might have if we’d known at the time. It certainly would have been unique.

Their motto is “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.”

The following online article wasn’t written about our service today but it is about the church services held here. It does a wonderful job of describing this church. One thing I did notice that was different today was the congregation didn’t have hymnals. The words to the four songs were printed in the bulletin.

We came to a service a couple of weeks ago but arriving at 8:30 for the 9:00 service left us too late to get a seat in the main section. We could have watched it on a big screen tv in the bar but we opted to come back another Sunday. As we were leaving, the man at the door recommended we come at 8:00 next time if we wanted a good seat.

Today we arrived at 8:05 and the place was practically empty. Of course it was. I guess most of the snowbirds have gone plus there’s the Coronavirus fear, so there wasn’t such a rush for seats. It was full though by 9:00.

On the stage there’s a five piece band with a lead singer and three backup singers. They were good. Really into the message. This as their warmup prior to the service.

The minister spoke several times, including his sermon. He was a very enthusiastic speaker but spoke in a very down to earth, relaxed manner. He even brought up Coronavirus and suggested people fist bump, elbow bump, or hip bump (lol) if they wanted during the service’s meet and greet. Our service began at 9:00 and was an hour long which was totally understandable as they also had an 11:00 service. As we were leaving there were people already arriving for the next service. Busy place.

We had planned on having 🍳 breakfast at Ruby Slipper but not a spot in their parking lot. Decided to go to Sunliner Diner as it was close to home even though we weren’t pleased with it the last time. I’m glad we did. It was much better today. Food was hot. That’s always a plus.

Another beautiful afternoon of 📖 reading on the deck and walking on the 🏖 beach. Sigh. Love it.

After having seen this poster a few weeks ago we were excited to finally go to the Ballyhoo Festival this morning.

What a disappointment.We apparently envisioned more than it was. There was live entertainment and the woman we heard was pretty good.

but the rest was just tents with crafts, pottery, jewelry, paintings, etc. for sale. Guess I’m past buying those things. There would also be food but we were there too early to partake.

This afternoon was so nice we stayed home and enjoyed the sun on the deck. Then in late afternoon we went for a beautiful beach walk.

Yesterday I mentioned that I had made a nice dinner. It was a new recipe for me and this is why.

In the grocery store we had seen these: tomatillos. Intriguing.

So I went on a search to find recipes utilizing them. Hmmmm. Not as easy as I thought it would be. Basically all I found were salsa recipes. So that’s what I went with.

I served it with spicy couscous (we had bought a pkg. of this a month ago), lime sour cream (included in the above recipe), plus the Blueberry Feta Salad that I shared with you yesterday. We liked it. Not sure if I can ever make it at home as I’ve never seen fresh tomatillos in the stores there.

Blueberry Feta Salad

It accompanied a very tasty entree but I’ll share that recipe with you another day.

This recipe called for red onion but I omitted it. I like red onion but Richard doesn’t. Plus we’re in the process of using what ingredients we have in the house so I’m trying not to buy too much. Thus I used our sliced almonds instead of buying whole ones.

I would definitely make this again. Super easy but very good.

After 📚 library, gym, and 🧘‍♀️ yoga we went to our new local coffee shop.

I decided to try their 🍵 matcha green tea latte. Wasn’t sure about it as they’d never made one before but it wasn’t bad. Richard had his normal black coffee ☕️ with a bit of brown sugar in it. I thought these packages of brown sugar were cute.

Richard loves their chicken salad in a croissant 🥐 but sadly for me they were all out of gluten free items.

A very quiet day today so I’ll tell you all about yesterday.

Yesterday morning we got up early and had breakfast at Another Broken Egg.

I had a lovely omelette and Richard had waffles. What really made it special were the beignets they brought to enjoy while waiting for our meals. They were delicious. Better than the ones we had last year in New Orleans. Imagine that.

Then off to the Seafood Festival and Car Show.

Now neither Richard nor I are seafood lovers or into cars but we do love looking at the arts and crafts vendors. We arrived shortly after nine which was before it officially opened but made for easy parking. Plus all the vendors were ready so we got to stroll through the sites with very few people there.

Score one for us. It’s always so interesting to see all the creative creations.

This welcomed us upon arrival.

Bushwhackers are an extremely popular drink here. I tried one last year. Whoa. Way to strong for me. I couldn’t drink it.

Here’s one a recipe, although most places put their own spin on them and don’t like to share their recipes.

Alabama Bushwacker

1. In a blender, combine vanilla ice cream, light rum, coconut rum, and coffee liqueur. Blend thoroughly until smooth.
2. Drizzle caramel syrup in a glass and pour the mix in.
3. Top with whipped cream, a cherry, and ground nutmeg.

At the festival there were two stages with various musicians performing all day. While we were there this singer/trumpeter was performing.

We had a lovely supper at our wonderful neighbours and Joanne helped Richard interpret his DNA results that he received. Besides having English, Irish, and Scottish he had some Norwegian. He was ecstatic! He’s always joked that he has Viking blood. Now he can say that for a fact. This made his day.

Only two weeks left but I can’t complain. It’s not freezing and there’s no snow.

Absolutely love this salad. The only alteration I made was omitting the jalapeño. Next time, and there definitely will be a next time (or many next times) I’ll make the cabbage finer. It was a bit too thick and too long. I’ll use the spiralizer and see how that works out. The cilantro is a tasty addition.

The peanut dressing is out of this world. It was so delicious.

I can honestly say that today was a most unique day.

I auditioned for a play.

Yesterday I saw this poster and thought why not give it a try. It would be fun and a great way to meet people. The play runs in February 2021. Rehearsals are January and February 2021. They hold auditions now so cast members can take scripts home with them and be ready for January when they return.

So at 9:45 am today off to the theatre I went. And unbelievably nervous. It’d been a long time since I’d auditioned for anything. I guess not since ACT’s production of Evita. Good lord. I just looked that up. It was in 2009. Time sure flies.

It was a cold reading, although some people had the scripts before hand. You could choose to audition for specific roles or choose to opt for any role. I chose any. It’s a small cast (3 men, 4 women) so I knew any role would be fun. We all sat in the theatre and watched each other as the directors had us read various roles from preselected pages. Thus several people were on stage auditioning together which not only displayed individual talent but also created character interactions.

Auditions took over an hour. What was especially good was they said they’d be making their decisions quickly and would inform us today. Super.

I got a call! I have a part. It’s Myra Marlowe. So tomorrow we’re going to have a read through and I believe they’re going to record it so cast members can rehearse at home listening for their cues. Interesting concept. I’ve never heard of that before.

So that’s it for today. Interesting day wasn’t it.

I challenged myself and now have given myself an even bigger challenge for next year.
